Personal message from Sworupa

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page in support of Help Nepal Network, started in memory of my late father Dr. Shyam S. Khadka.

Earlier this year, I was going to be the first Nepali women to run the Boston Marathon with a goal to raise $10,000 for the renovation of Janata School in the rural village of Mawadin in Sankhuwasabha district of Nepal. Unfortunately, I had stress fracture on my femur bone in one of my legs, which prevented me from running the marathon. Four months later, I have decided to run the Berlin Marathon in Germany on September 30, 2012, as a means to continue toward that goal.

My effort to raise funds for Help Nepal Network not only helps in making education accessible to many children from Mawadin and surrounding villages but also marks the 5th anniversary of my father’s demise. As a rural sociologist, my father believed in the value of education for deprived communities and constantly encouraged us to help the underprivileged. It was my father who inspired me to take up sports while I was young. He told me I would succeed in anything if I applied myself to it fully, and taught me never to fear failure in the course of learning.

First, I want to thank you for your support throughout this time. So far, we have raised $4,961 in donations for the renovation of the school. Coming off the crutches after ten long weeks and regaining my physical and mental strength, I believe I am ready to take on those 26.2 miles. Had it not been for your moral support, I would not have been able to prepare myself to run Berlin marathon just within a few months after recovering from the injury.

But I need more of your support, to help me in my quest to fulfill my goal and support the education of hundreds of children in Mawadin village in Nepal. If you haven’t already donated, I would encourage you to contribute any amount to this cause. If you have already donated, I am grateful for your contribution, and would appreciate if you can help spread the word to others.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and secure. It is also the most efficient way to make a contribution to my fundraising efforts.

Thank you so much for your encouragement!

About Sworupa Khadka

Sworupa Khadka is among the top ten fastest female runners in Nepal. She has run three marathons and over a dozen other races. She recently completed the 2011 ING New York City Marathon with her personal record of 3 hours and 15 minutes, where her standing for her age group was 65th out of 6,999 runners. Sworupa ran her first marathon in 2006 to raise $6,000 for Help Nepal Network to build a health post in the remote region of Haripurwa in Nepal. For the last six years, Sworupa has continued long distance running as a reason to test her personal endurance and determination, while advancing it as a cause to make difference on the lives of the underprivileged

About Janata School

Janata School was established in 1952 with minimalist buildings that have been dilapidated over the decades. The poor condition of the buildings makes it difficult for classes to be held during hot, cold and rainy days. Students come from underprivileged groups, particularly from the Dalit caste. Help Nepal Network plans to renovate the school, strengthen its management, and provide a safe and comfortable environment for the students to learn. The project is part of Help Nepal Network's overall mission of improving educational facilities for disadvantaged Nepalese living in remote villages like Mawadin. Sworupa's goal of raising $10,000 will fully cover the cost of renovation and management support
