Introduction

Six years after its establishment, Help Nepal Network (HeNN) is now active in about a dozen countries. HeNN chapters in Australia, USA, UK, Sweden and Nepal operate as registered charities or non-profit organisations. HeNN groups or representatives are also active in Austria, Canada, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Russia and Saudi Arabia.

In the last six years, HeNN has successfully executed more than 30 projects in Nepal. HeNN’s projects continue to benefit the poor and needy in Nepal. HeNN would like to heartily thank and acknowledge the contributions and support of many individuals and organizations spread across the globe, without which our endeavors would not have been possible. Health post in Mugu

Awareness programme being conducted in Mugu

The HeNN health post in Mugu district is functioning well. An awareness programme on women empowerment was held within the premises of the health post on Feb 4th 2007. Local women and recognized personalities from different Village Development Committees (VDC) of Mugu district participated in the programme. Among others, the programme was an attempt to encourage women of Mugu to approach the health post for required health checkups.

Medical equipments and consumables donated by Kullbergska Hospital, Sweden have been dispatched to the health post through HeNN Sweden. A donation of UK £1500 from Everest Marathon Fund-UK Charity, facilitated by HeNN UK, has been ear-marked for the health post. The donation will help train two existing staff of the health post The donation will also be used to conduct effective health awareness campaigns in different VDCs of Mugu district. To effectively conduct the awareness campaign, Miss Bhasa Koirala, a staff nurse, has been recruited to work in the health post between April – July, 2007. She has already worked in Kalikot District for one year as a staff nurse and she has good experience, knowledge and enthusiasm to conduct health awareness campaigns.


Shelter for Conflict Impacted Children in Dhulikhel

A foundation stone was laid on 25th March 2007, to commence the construction of Shelter for Conflict Impacted Children (CIS) in Dhulikhel, Kavre District. The foundation work is taking place speedily and construction of the Shelter is expected to be complete by December 2007 Construction of the Shelter was initiated with an initial sum of US$ 14,700 provided by HeNN UK. HeNN Nepal officials have been frequently visiting the construction site. The officials have also met the concerned district authorities and have received assurance for any kind of help when required.

Short term projects

Sri Rameshwor Higher Secondary School Mamling, Sankhuasabha

The project to reconstruct the school which has 700 students attending in Sankhuasabha district in now complete. HeNN supported the reconstruction of the school building at a cost of NRs 251,250.

Sri Bagh Bhairav Secondary School, Lalitpur

The project aims to construct three additional rooms for the Sri Bagh Bhairav Lower Secondary School in Chaughare VDC of Lalitpur district which will benefit 229 students. The total cost of the project is estimated to be around US$2900. On 28th Jan 2007, HeNN disbursed half the cost towards the first phase of the project. The remaining funds for the second phase of the project will be disbursed upon receipt of the project progress report.

Gogan Dada Primary School, Dolkha

The project aims to construct 5 rooms for the School in Jafe VDC of Dolkha district which will benefit 117 students studying upto class 5. HeNN has pledged US$ 4400 for the school building construction. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the school and HeNN Nepal in January 2007 and half the funds were released towards the first phase of construction. Amount for the second phase will be disbursed upon receipt of the project progress report. As of April 2007, the building construction was running smoothly and halfway through.

Light up Humla

The Light Up Humla Campaign aims to illuminate nearly 7,000 houses in Humla district with solar-powered electric lights. HeNN has supported the campaign with total of US$5800 The funds were disbursed in two installments of US$2900 each on 25th March 2006 and 1st March 2007. HeNN’s contribution to the campaign is expected to “Light Up” an additional 100 houses in the district.

The UNDP (Sarlahi) Project which aims to raise awareness of HIV is running smoothly despite current social unrest in the Terai region. Between Jan 2007 - April 2007, one street drama, several outreach services and counseling regarding HIV/AIDS were performed in Haripurwa VDC. All the project activities primarily focus on prevention, care and support of HIVAIDS. Four persons have tested positive for HIV in the Help Nepal health Clinic in Sarlahi. The Clinic benefits Sarlahi and neighboring districts with general health and basic pathological services including diagnosis and treatment of Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

Gwalinda Water Project in Godavari, Lalitpur district is expected to provide basic water supplies to residents of Gwalinda village. The total cost of the project is calculated at US$2400. In February 2007, US$ 1470 was funded by HeNN towards the project. Subsequently, 1000 metres of High Density Polythene Pipe (50mm/4Kg pressure) was procured and delivered to the community. The Lions Club Lalitpur chapter has also procured and delivered 600 meters of High Density Polythene Pipe. The pipes have been laid and a few running water taps and bathing area were constructed to meet the local demand for water consumption.
