Medical equipment urgently needed for remote health post in the Himalayas.
A vital health post in one of the remotest areas of Nepal is in urgent need of basic medical equipment. A global help network, Help Nepal, aims to raise US $7,500 needed to set up this vital medial centre in the Mugu district. The centre in the village of Murma was built with the help of the local community.
Mugu health post has come into operation from 15th of June 2004, it was officially inaugurated by Vice President of District Development Committee, Mr.Hitane, and other members of the committeee were also present at the inauguration ceremony. First day, 2 patients were checked but the next day saw 14 patients come in for health check ups. Apart from Murma villagers, the health post has been visited by neighboring villages Sheri and Khumale for medical check ups. Currently, the post has 4 health workers.
With the building work complete, local health officials have drawn up a list of the medical equipment and medicine needed for the centre. Next to 4 beds the health workers require everyday items ranging from scissors, stitches and bandages to simple antibiotics and antimalarials.
In this region with few roads, villagers currently have to walk at least 2 days to the nearest hospital to get even simple antibiotics such as penicillin.
The US $7,500 will not only equip the health post, but also keep it running for over 3 months. Help Nepal also aims to support the local community with the running costs.
The health post is located in the heart of the Himalayas, on the banks of Rara Lake. This undiscovered beauty spot is not on the usual trekking routes due to its inaccessibility. This isolation adds to the lack of even basic healthcare facilities in the region.
Life expectancy in Nepal is only 59 years compared to over 78 in the UK and around 42 percent of the population live below the poverty line. Infant mortality is 70 per 1000 live births compared to 5 per 1000 live births in the UK. Exact figures for the Mugu area are not known but predicted to be much worse.
