Spinal Rehabilitation Centre (SIRC) - Why?

Spinal Rehab Centre - Sher Bahadur Sherbahadur, a 25 year old man from Gorkha suffered a fall whilst he collecting fodder for his cattle on the 4th of July 2003. He was married and had a child. Without the Spinal Rehabilitation Centre, he would have died through the complications of spinal cord injury such as painful pressure sores.  The SIRC taught him and his family about how he could still live an active and independent life despite being paraplegic.

Sherbahadur Gurung; “a poor villager cutting grass on the slopes will reach out further with his sickle. It is a matter of choice. The poorer you are the higher the risk you take to feed your family. Inevitably the chance you will slip and fall is therefore that much higher. I am very grateful for the SIRC without which I would not be able to continue to look after myself and my family”

Since its inception in April  2002, by Sir Edmund Hillary, the SIRC has treated  515  patients  like Sherbahadur Gurung.   The average age of patients admitted  at SIRC is between  20 to 35 years and the vast majority stay for 3 months receiving crucial rehabilitation. More than 60% of the patient receive full and partial charity.

SIRC is entirely dependent on charity. It does not receive any governmental funding despite it being the only institution of it’s type in Nepal receiving patients from all 75 districts of Nepal.

HeNN is helping SIRC to raise funds for their new centre in 2008.

How can you help?

The new Centre still requires some £100,000 for furniture and equipment and instead of again looking for foreign donors it is considered that it would be appropriate to encourage the large and resourceful pool of expatriate Nepalis to contribute to this requirement. The following list sums up the different items that are needed urgently.
